Tomorrow, Tuesday, October 31, 2023, is Trick-or-Treat night, and we would like to remind our residents to be cautious and aware of children and parents who will be participating in the Halloween festivities. We want everyone to have a fun and enjoyable Halloween filled with laughter and spooky memories. so please take extra care while driving and keep an eye out for those who are out and about. Let’s all work together to make this a safe and memorable Halloween for everyone!

The Derry Township Police Department has developed some safety tips that we all can benefit from following:

  1. Trick-or-treat with trusted adult friends and family. Have a trusted friend or family member watching over you and your friends while you Trick-or-Treat in familiar neighborhoods.
  2. Turn on headlights early to spot kids from further away.
  3. Dress to impress…..safely. Make sure costumes and candy bags or pails are reflective. Glow sticks and flashlights are another great way to improve visibility while trick-or-treating. Costumes shouldn’t drag too far on the ground to avoid tripping, and masks, hats, and shoes should be well-fitting and designed or worn so you can see the environment around you.
  4. Watch for kids. If you plan to be driving during trick-or-treat hours, watch for children walking on roadways, medians, and curbs. Be sure to enter and exit driveways carefully.  Expect the unexpected child running across the street.  Be prepared.
  5. Rules of the Road. Use sidewalks whenever possible and try to cross streets at corners or crosswalks. Remind kids to look both ways when crossing the street and to walk rather than run from house to house.
  6. Stay on the path. Don’t stray from the well-marked routes to get to the candy. Always use the sidewalk, and do not cut across yards or use alleys. Wherever possible, cross the road at a crosswalk.
  7. When in doubt, throw the candy out. Avoid candy that has loose wrappings, is completely unwrapped, has puncture holes, or is homemade and not factory-wrapped.
