Derry Township Police and the Township of Derry would like to remind everyone that schools are back in session, Monday, August 22nd, 2022. Traffic and pedestrian activity will be increased in and around the schools and on the walking routes to the schools. School Buses will be out, making their pickups and drop-offs at various times during the school days.

We would like to drop off a few safety tips here, for motorists and pedestrians, to hopefully make things a little safer for everyone.

  • Drivers, please Slow Down. Not only in school zones, but in areas where there may be added pedestrian activity and in areas where school buses are making their stops.
  • Motorists need to always be vigilant for school buses picking up and dropping off students.
  • Pedestrians should use sidewalks when available and should cross roadways in marked crosswalks.
  • Parents should closely supervise children and model proper walking safety for them
  • Pedestrians should not be distracted by phones or other devices and, if using headphones or similar devices, keep the volume down to hear traffic and the environment around them.
  • Please slow down in signalized school zones. Newly enhanced school zone signals have been installed for everyoneโ€™s safety and should bring more awareness of motoristsโ€™ speeds in and around the school zones.

Penalties for motorist violations in school zones and around stopped school buses are serious and could result in increased fines and loss of driverโ€™s license. More importantly, such violations could result in crashes and injury or death of a child.
