The Shade Tree Commission consists of five members, each appointed for a one- to five- year term of service. The board has the authority to increase the tree canopy by providing more comprehensive regulations for the protection, planting, maintenance, and removal of trees in the public right-of-way and other township-owned property and public spaces.
One such regulation is outlined in the Shade Tree Ordinance, which specifies the location of trees between the curb and sidewalk (tree lawn), their relation to intersections, signs, and streetlights, the height of branches over streets and sidewalks, and allowable planting varieties.
To plant or remove trees on the tree lawn, a Tree Application must first be submitted to the Public Works Department (at no charge).
